Yogyakarta is a captivating city situated between the stunning Mount Merapi volcano to the north and the sparkling waters of the Indonesian Ocean to the south. It offers a lively mix of tradition and progress with an easy, pleasant lifestyle. Home to over 50 public and private higher education institutions, students set the tone in Yogya. Gadjah Mada University plays a prominent role in its host city, but by no means dominate it. The city is surprisingly compact. One may tour the streets easily on a bike or by foot, although public transport system is extensive. Traffic jams, pollution and other big city problems are minimal in Yogya. In general, the cost of living is less than most major cities in Indonesia. Students generally have no difficulty in finding inexpensive accommodations within walking distance from campus. A charming city with hospitable inhabitants and pleasant climate, Yogyakarta is likely to be voted as the most desirable place to study in Indonesia.
