The University

Ranked by Asiaweek (1999) as the number one multidisciplinary higher education institution in Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University nowadays is respected as a leading university in the region. Since its establishment in 1949, the institution has provided innovative and leading edge research and education to Indonesia. GMU is well known as an eminent research university, continuously obtaining competitive research funding and producing research publication and citation. This research endeavor is fueled by 2,270 academic staff in 18 faculties and 14 research centers, publishing over 60 journal titles routinely. The university attracts students of high caliber, with 35,000 students currently enrolled at diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate level. In the midst of its exertion toward academic excellence, GMU is by no mean an ivory tower. The university has devoted itself as a community oriented higher education institution, continuously in touch with the people. GMU pivotal role in the current political upheaval, is consistent with this principle and further firmly positioned its place as a leading institution of change toward the ideals of a civil society.
